What was the turning point that prompted you to lose weight?

My senior year of college, I became engaged and was so excited to go shopping for a wedding dress! That is, until I actually got to the store. The boutiques turned me away because they didn’t carry plus-size dresses. I couldn’t try anything on. My weight had destroyed what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life. It made me open my eyes and realize that I needed to do something to make a change. I went to Target, bought a few Jillian Michaels DVDs, and embarked on a healthy lifestyle.

When did you start trying to lose weight?

In June 2014, I started working out five times a week. I was a bit nervous to start – especially after my first couple of workouts. I had to take breaks often, and I worried that I would never make it through a whole workout. But once I began to notice that I was losing weight, I knew I could keep it up!

A couple of months later, I joined for more guidance on my weight-loss journey and advice on how to start eating properly. I began cooking healthy recipes from the site, tracking my foods, and consistently working out.

Were there times when you wanted to quit or give up? How did you stay motivated?

Whenever I felt like I was falling off the bandwagon, I would read to weekly podcast to motivate myself. She always teaches me something to help me grow and keep moving – and the witty banter always lifts my spirits. I am also a very organized person – I love lists and planners – so the site was perfect for me! I could track everything in the Food and Fitness journal, which held me accountable to my goals.

What’s your current exercise routine?

I work out at least five times a week, but I often mix it up to keep things interesting. Sometimes I’ll do a Jillian circuit workout or one of her DVDs. On other days, I’ll go for a jog with my dog or hit a yoga class. I enjoy the diversity, and trying out new forms of exercise has been fun!

What’s your daily diet look like?

For breakfast, I’ll usually have eggs with veggies and some fruit on the side. I bring my lunch to work, and I typically take a salad with avocado, chicken or turkey, and brown rice. As for snacks, I’ll usually have fruit with almond butter or veggies with hummus. Dinner varies, but it’s usually fish or chicken with some sort of veggie (broccoli, asparagus, green beans, Brussels sprouts) and a grain (brown rice or quinoa).

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal?

My favorite snack is an apple with almond butter, and breakfast burritos are my favorite healthy meal!

How has losing weight changed your life?

I love that I can go shopping and actually enjoy trying on clothes. I love that I can participate in outdoor activities with my friends and family. I love that I am proud of the person I see in the mirror. I love that I enjoy meeting new people again and am not embarrassed to see old friends.  I love being healthy and happy!

Do you have any advice for those trying to lose weight?

My advice is to really dedicate yourself to the reason you want to lose weight and what you will gain from all of your hard work. I want to lose weight so that I can be healthy enough to enjoy my life with my friends and family. When I am tempted to overeat, or give up before the end of the workout, I think about all I will be able to do if I just keep pushing!
